DAY 3
LIFE IN A SHTETL
Tue. Oct 13, 2026
  • Depart Warsaw and travel north to the town of Tykocin, one of the best-preserved shtetls in Poland.
  • The town of Tykocin will provide us with insights into the Jewish world of the shtetl. We’ll walk its streets and visit its Baroque synagogue with historic wall paintings that were reconstructed in the 1970s. The former beit midrash (study hall) is the setting for a museum about the town and its Jewish past.
  • Just outside Tykocin, we’ll trace the footsteps of the town’s 2,000 Jews who in August 1941 were marched into the Lopuchowo Forest and executed. We’ll pay tribute to them and try to comprehend, in this quiet woodland with its mass graves and monuments, the last moments of Jewish community of Tykocin.
  • Enjoy a packed lunch while traveling onward.
  • For many years, the world knew little about Treblinka. This extermination camp was leveled completely by the Nazis and very few inmates survived to give witness. However, it is now understood that this was one of largest killing centers of the Holocaust. Our focus will be on Treblinka as a place of Jewish heroism and not just of death. The educator Janusz Korczak was killed here because he refused to abandon the children from the orphanage he ran. We will also recall the prisoner revolt and escape attempt of May 2, 1943.
  • Return to Warsaw in the late afternoon.
  • Enjoy a free evening in Warsaw. Before World War Two and subsequent Communist rule, Warsaw was considered Europe’s “city of lights.” It is now regaining that reputation. Check out Warsaw’s nightlife and take your choice from its many restaurants, bar, and cafés.
Overnight: Warsaw Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
DAY 4
LIFE IN A SHTETL AND ITS TRAGIC END
Wed. Oct 14, 2026
  • Take a guided visit to the remains of the Warsaw Ghetto, with stops at:
    • The Ghetto Wall remnants, silent witnesses to a city divided and lives imprisoned.
    • The Nathan Rapoport Warsaw Ghetto Memorial, honoring those who rose up during the 1943 uprising in an act of defiance and dignity.
    • Mila 18, the underground bunker that served as the headquarters of the Jewish Fighting Organization and a symbol of armed resistance.
    • Umschlagplatz, the deportation point where thousands of Jews were forced onto trains bound for Treblinka.
  • Continue to the Gensha Cemetery, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the world. Walk among its unique tombstones and honor the memories of leaders, artists, and scholars who shaped Polish Jewish life.
  • Visit the award-winning POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Through interactive exhibits, trace 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland, from thriving communities to Holocaust devastation and modern revival.
  • Break for lunch on your own near the museum.

    • Walk through Auschwitz I and its museum, where photographs, personal belongings, and exhibits document the lives, identities, and suffering of those imprisoned here.
    • Continue to Auschwitz II–Birkenau, whose vast grounds, barracks, and ruins reveal the immense scale of Nazi brutality and the industrialized nature of genocide.
    • Pause together for guided reflection, honoring the memory of the victims while considering the moral responsibility of remembrance and bearing witness.
  • Receive a packaged lunch during the day’s travel.
  • Visit the restored Oswiecim Synagogue, a quiet reminder of the Jewish community that once lived nearby.

  • Arrive in Prague and check into your hotel.
  • Dinner with Tomáš Kraus, a prominent figure in the Czech-Jewish community. Presently, he holds the position of Director at the Terezín Initiative Institute and serves as the representative of the American Jewish Committee for the Czech Republic.
Overnight: Prague Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
DAY 9
TEREZIN: REMEMBERING THE PAST
Mon. Oct 19, 2026
  • Drive to Terezin (Theresienstadt), the ghetto-camp established here during World War Two where over 100,000 thousand Jews were worked to death or sent to extermination camps in the East. Our visit to Terezin will include:
    • The Historical Exhibition which explains the history of the camp and its role in Hitler’s Final Solution.

  • Stop at the Old Town Square, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful public spaces of Europe.
