Program Itinerary

DAY 1
SETTING OUT FOR MUNICH
Thu. Feb 11, 2027
  • Depart Newark (EWR) on Lufthansa flight LH 413 at 8:50 PM.
Overnight: Flight
DAY 2
JEWISH LIFE: THEN & NOW
Fri. Feb 12, 2027
  • Arrive in Munich (MUC) at 10:25 AM and step into Bavaria’s capital - a city of striking beauty and deep historical complexity.
  • Meet your guide, who will accompany your group throughout the journey, helping bring each story, site, and moment into focus.
  • Begin with an orientation walk through Munich’s Old Town. Move through Marienplatz, the vibrant heart of the city, and take in the Neues Rathaus with its iconic Glockenspiel. Continue past the Frauenkirche, grounding yourselves in Munich as a living, modern city before exploring its more difficult past.
  • At St.-Jakobs-Platz, encounter Jewish Munich today. Visit the Ohel Jakob Synagogue, alongside the Jewish Museum and Community Center. Together, these spaces reflect both rupture and renewal - offering a powerful introduction to Jewish life in Germany after the Holocaust.
  • As evening approaches, check into the hotel and prepare to welcome Shabbat.
  • Join the Beth Shalom – Liberal Jewish Community of Munich for Kabbalat Shabbat services. Experience an egalitarian Reform community that reflects the reemergence of progressive Jewish life in Germany in recent decades.
  • Enjoy a Shabbat dinner at a local restaurant. Begin to explore the guiding questions of the trip: What does it mean to remember? What responsibility do we carry? Where do we see ourselves in this story?
Overnight: Munich Meals: Dinner
DAY 3
THE RISE OF NAZISM & ITS CONSEQUENCES
Sat. Feb 13, 2027
  • Begin the day by stepping into the origins of one of history’s darkest chapters.
  • Through a guided Third Reich & WWII Walking Tour, explore how Munich became the birthplace of Nazism. In the aftermath of World War I, amid economic collapse and political instability, the city became fertile ground for radical ideas.
  • Stand at the Hofbräuhaus, where early Nazi meetings drew followers. Continue to the Feldherrnhalle, where Hitler’s failed coup attempt marked a turning point. Walk through Königsplatz, once the stage for massive rallies, and pause in the Hofgarten to reflect on the White Rose resistance - young students who chose to stand against the regime.
  • From ideology, move to its consequences.
  • Travel to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, the first Nazi concentration camp, established in 1933. Walk through the grounds where systems of persecution were first tested and implemented. Through guided interpretation and personal reflection, consider how ordinary people became part of extraordinary harm - and what choices were possible.
  • Return to Munich in the afternoon.
  • Pass by Olympiapark, site of the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the murder of Israeli athletes brought Jewish vulnerability into the modern global arena. Reflect on how the past continues to shape Jewish identity and global awareness today.
  • Enjoy dinner, with time to decompress, connect, and process together.
Overnight: Munich Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
DAY 4
GERMANY AFTER 1945: REBUILDING A SOCIETY
Sun. Feb 14, 2027
  • Shift perspective and explore Munich as a modern, creative, and evolving city.
  • Begin the day at BMW World and the BMW Museum, where Germany’s postwar transformation comes into focus. Through innovation, design, and engineering, consider how a nation rebuilt itself and redefined its identity in the decades following World War II.
  • Continue into Munich’s historic center for a Bavarian Food & Market Tour at the Viktualienmarkt. As you move through this vibrant open-air market, experience daily life through taste - sampling traditional specialties while learning how food reflects culture, identity, and community.
  • In the afternoon, uncover a different side of Munich through its street art culture. Despite its polished image, Munich played an important role in the early graffiti movement of the 1980s. Travel by public transportation and on foot to neighborhoods such as Giesing and the Schlachthofviertel, where bold murals and evolving works reflect the voices of both pioneering and contemporary artists.
  • Through this experience, explore how art becomes a platform for expression, identity, and sometimes resistance - especially among younger generations.
  • As the day unfolds - from innovation to tradition to expression - consider how societies rebuild, preserve, and reimagine themselves.
  • Gather in the evening for a farewell dinner. Reflect together on the journey and the questions that remain: What have we learned? What responsibility do we carry forward? How does this experience shape our understanding of Jewish identity today?
Overnight: Munich Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 5
REFLECTION & RETURN
Mon. Feb 15, 2027
  • Transfer to Munich International Airport for your return flight to the United States.
  • Depart Munich (MUC) on Lufthansa flight LH 412 at 4:10 PM; arrive in Newark (EWR) at 7:05 PM.
  • Return home with new perspectives, deeper questions, and a stronger sense of connection - to history, to identity, and to one another.
