DAY 1
WELCOME TO FRANKFURT
Sun. Apr 26, 2026
  • Arrive at Frankfurt International Airport.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Welcome dinner and overview of the group journey with your J² Expert Educator, including reviewing the itinerary, group themes, and the different narratives. Share group and personal goals.

DAY 2
JERUSALEM ON THE RHINE
Mon. Apr 27, 2026
  • Early departure and drive to the Shum communities of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, the cradle of Ashkenazi Judaism, and the leading Jewish centers of Germany by the 12th century.
  • Speyer, home to one of the most important medieval Jewish communities north of the Alps. Here the Jewish community built a mikvah in 1120, still intact, some 30 feet under street level, which collected both groundwater and rainwater.
  • Depart to Worms.
  • Group lunch, en route.
  • Visit the Holy Sands Jewish cemetery, the oldest one in Europe, containing 2000 tombstones that remain intact since 1076.
  • Discover the Rashi Synagogue, which dates back to 1175 and is named after the famous medieval Torah commentator who spent part of his career there.
  • Step into living Jewish history with a visit to Mainz’s striking new synagogue, inaugurated in 2010—where bold contemporary design meets centuries of Jewish heritage, symbolizing renewal, resilience, and continuity in the heart of Germany.
  • Late return to Frankfurt. Evening at leisure and dinner on your own.
Overnight: Frankfurt Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 3
JEWISH LIFE IN FRANKFURT – THEN AND NOW
Tue. Apr 28, 2026
  • Introductory tour to Frankfurt, including:
    • Paulskirche – the location of Germany's very first democratically elected parliament in 1848.
    • The Roemer and the Roemerplatz, City Hall and old town square.
    • The Book Burning Memorial, site of the Nazi book burning.
    • The Stumbling Stones – a sobering way to commemorate the many victims who perished under the Nazi regime.
    • St. Bartholomew, better known as the Kaiserdom – an Imperial Church and site of the elections and coronations of the Holy Roman Emperor for centuries.
  • The Frankfurt Judengasse was once one of the most important centers of Jewish life in Europe. We'll visit the Judengasse Museum about everyday Jewish life in the early modern period, including the archaeological remains of five houses in the Frankfurt Judengasse.
  • Lunch on own, en route.
  • Stop next to the Jewish Ghetto Wall (Staufenmauer). Once part of the city's defensive walls, built in 1180, it later became one of the walls that surrounded the first Jewish Ghetto in Germany.
  • Walk along the Holocaust Memorial Wall, a personal memorial that the city of Frankfurt has created to honor the memory of the 12,000 Frankfurt Jewish citizens who lost their lives during the Holocaust, including Anne Frank.
  • Continue to the recently renewed Jewish Museum, displaying more than a 900-year history of Jewish life and culture in Frankfurt, including an exhibit relating to Anne Frank in the Frank Family Center.
  • Meet with one of the local community leaders and take a tour of Frankfurt’s Jewish Community Center, which contains a Jewish Day School, a kindergarten, a youth center, a senior citizens’ center, and a kosher restaurant.
  • Dinner at Sohar's kosher restaurant with members of the local Jewish community.
Overnight: Frankfurt Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
DAY 4
FROM FRANKFURT TO NUREMBERG
Wed. Apr 29, 2026
  • Check out of the hotel and drive to Nuremberg.
  • Arrive in Nuremberg and ascend to the Imperial Castle, for a great view of the city.
  • Walk through the north part of the Old Town to the Hauptmarkt (the main market square), and stop at the beautiful Gothic-style Frauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady.
  • Lunch on own, en route.
  • Visit the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds (Reichsparteitagsgelände). Intended as an impressive backdrop for the Nazi party rallies and staged to demonstrate their power, the remains of the buildings are a vivid testimony to the megalomania of the National Socialist regime.
  • Proceed to the Documentation Center in the north wing of the Congress Hall of the Reich Party Rally Grounds, including the temporary exhibition "Fascination and Terror", which looks at the causes, the context, and the consequences of the national socialist reign of terror.
  • Conclude the day at Courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice, where the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals took place.
  • Check into the hotel, followed by dinner on own and evening at leisure.
Overnight: Nuremberg Meals: Breakfast
DAY 5
PILSEN'S JEWISH HERITAGE AND BEER CULTURE
Thu. Apr 30, 2026
  • Check out of the hotel. Depart from Nuremberg and enjoy a scenic drive through the Bavarian countryside into the Czech Republic.
  • Stop in the Czech city of Pilsen and visit the stunning Great Synagogue, the second-largest synagogue in Europe and an architectural gem. Explore its fascinating history, including its resilience during turbulent times and its role in the Jewish community. Learn about Jewish life in Pilsen, past and present, and admire the synagogue's beautiful Moorish-Romanesque architecture.
  • Stroll through Pilsen's charming Old Town, passing by landmarks such as Republic Square, the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, and Renaissance-style townhouses.
  • Embark on a guided tour of the iconic Pilsner Urquell Brewery, where pilsner beer was born in 1842. Discover the brewing process, visit the historic cellars, and taste unfiltered beer straight from the barrels.
  • Continue your journey to Prague.
  • Upon arrival in Prague, embark on a delightful boat ride along the Vltava River, which winds its way through the heart of the city. From the tranquil waters, you'll have a unique perspective of Prague's picturesque skyline, with its spires, domes, and historic buildings reflected in the river below.
  • Check into the hotel.
Overnight: Prague Meals: Breakfast
DAY 6
TEREZIN: REMEMBERING THE PAST
Fri. May 1, 2026
  • Meet with Tomáš Kraus, a prominent figure in the Czech-Jewish community. Presently, he holds the position of Director at the Terezín Initiative Institute and serves as the representative of the American Jewish Committee for the Czech Republic.
  • Drive to Terezin (Theresienstadt), the ghetto-camp established here during World War Two where over 100,000 thousand Jews were worked to death or sent to extermination camps in the East. Our visit to Terezin will include:
    • The Historical Exhibition which explains the history of the camp and its role in Hitler’s Final Solution.
    • Chilling propaganda movies made by the Nazis which were designed to convince the world that Terezin was a spa town and retirement center for elderly Jews rather than a death-ridden way station to the extermination camps.
    • A reconstruction of the overcrowded dormitory and other parts of the camp complex.
    • The Hidden Synagogue that an inmate, Artur Berlanger, created out of a tiny storage space.
    • A memorial service where we’ll remember those who died here as well as the more than 80,000 Jews who were sent to be killed in Auschwitz and elsewhere in the East.
  • Group lunch, en route.
  • Return to Prague and prepare for Shabbat.
  • Join Ec Chajim for Kabbalat Shabbat services and experience the vibrant energy of Prague’s progressive Jewish community.

Overnight: Prague Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 7
SHABBAT IN PRAGUE
Sat. May 2, 2026
  • Stop at the Old Town Square, one of the most breathtakingly beautiful public spaces of Europe. It's been Prague’s main marketplace since the 10th century and many of its glorious buildings date from the 14th century. We’ll see its Astronomical Clock, a symbol of the city, and explore Prague’s Art Nouveau architecture. We’ll find out, at the huge monument honoring Jan Hus, why this 14th-century “heretic” who was burned at the stake is still considered a Czech hero.
  • Experience Prague’s historic center on a tour of the Castle District. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven of beauty, culture, and history. Highlights include:
    • A Place of Power: Prague Castle is the world’s largest castle and has since the 9th century been the glorious home for rulers from kings of Bohemia to the current Czech president.
    • The City of 100 Spires: Many of these rulers were buried at St. Vitus Cathedral. Visit this great Gothic structure and ask why one of Europe’s least religious countries has so many remarkable churches.
    • Golden Lane: Ordinary families also lived in the Castle District. Visit Golden Lane with its homes where palace guards, goldsmiths, and, or so the story goes, alchemists once lived.
    • A First Glimpse of Mr. Kafka: Culture is everywhere in Prague. We’ll stop by 22 Golden Lane, the home of Franz Kafka.
    • Don’t Judge a Town by Its Name: It may be called the Lesser Town but it’s hard to imagine a more charming area with its baroque architecture and the famous Charles Bridge.
  • Mark the end of Shabbat with a havdalah ceremony by the Vltava River.
  • Optional: Attend a concert at the iconic Rudolphinum Dvořák Hall.
Overnight: Prague Meals: Breakfast
DAY 8
THE GLORY OF JEWISH PRAGUE
Sun. May 3, 2026
  • Explore the sometimes glorious, sometimes tragic, past of Prague’s Jews with a visit to the Jewish Ghetto. From the 13th century, Jews could live only within the ghetto’s walls. In the 18th century, the ghetto was abolished and much of the area was destroyed. Nonetheless, important sites were safeguarded, making this perhaps the best area in Europe to experience how Jews once lived. Our visit will include:
    • The Maisel Synagogue:The early 16th-century was a golden age for Prague’s Jews and the ghetto became famed for its intellectual and economic achievements. This synagogue was built to serve the growing Jewish population.
    • The Pinkas Synagogue: Built in 1535, this fine synagogue is more evidence of the community’s prosperity. Today, it also serves as a poignant memorial to a darker period for Czech Jews with tributes to victims of the Holocaust and an exhibition of art produced by children in the Terezin camp just outside Prague.
    • The Old Jewish Cemetery: For 300 years, the ghetto’s Jews were buried here. This cemetery is a place to mourn but also to celebrate the diversity and achievements of Prague’s Jews. The Talmudic scholar and mystic Rabbi Judah Loew (known as the Maharal) is buried here alongside the 16th-century scientist David Gans and the Gershom family, pioneers of printing.
    • The Spanish Synagogue: This golden synagogue provides a glimpse into Jewish life after the ghetto walls came down. This stunning synagogue was built in 1868 in the former ghetto area by Prague Jews seeking a more reformed style of prayer.
    • The Altneushul: Europe’s oldest synagogue is a treasure trove of stories of golems and great rabbis. Find out why a synagogue built in 1250 was originally named the New Synagogue and is now known as the Old-New Synagogue.
  • Free afternoon with time for some last-minute shopping and touring on your own.
  • Farewell dinner and group reflection at a restaurant.
Overnight: Prague Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
DAY 9
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
Mon. May 4, 2026
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Return flight to the US.
Meals: Breakfast
