Program Itinerary
- Depart the US.
- Arrive at Ben-Gurion International Airport.
- Meet your J² Expert Educator who will accompany you on this journey of education and inspiration.
- Transfer to Jerusalem and check into the hotel.
- Shabbat candle-lighting at the hotel.
- Shabbat services at the hotel followed by dinner.
- The Old City Ramparts: Stroll along the ancient outer walls for a bird's-eye view of the remarkably diverse yet closely bound communities of Jerusalem's Old City.
- Take a walking tour through Jerusalem's Old City and the Jewish Quarter and experience the center of Jewish life, history, and holiness. Among the highlights will be:
- A climb to the rooftops to see and discuss the ties and tensions between the different faith groups and communities of the Old City. From this one spot, we'll look out over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, venerated by Christian groups as the burial place of Jesus; the golden Dome of the Rock, which is sacred to Islam; and the Jewish Quarter's famous Hurva Synagogue.
- The Cardo, the main street of Roman-controlled Jerusalem and its spectacular Byzantine-era columns.
- Hurva Square, the center of modern-day life in the Jewish Quarter.
- View the Jerusalem Archaeological Park, a large-scale excavation that has uncovered vital parts of ancient Jerusalem.
- No visit to Israel is complete without experiencing the Kotel (Western Wall), widely considered Judaism's holiest site.
- ADULTS: Jerusalem and Its Writers: Explore the streets of Jerusalem through the eyes and words of its poets and authors, including Yehuda Amichai and S. Y. Agnon.
- YOUTH: Visit the newly-renovated Tower of David Museum for the history of Jerusalem and enjoy a visual journey through Jerusalem's story.
- ALL: Three Stars in the Israeli Sky: At nightfall, we will mark the end of a special Shabbat with a communal havdalah ceremony.
- Enjoy an early breakfast at the hotel before setting out to explore the Dead Sea region.
- The Last Stand: Climb via the Snake Path OR via the Roman Ramp OR take the cable car to the top of Masada with its extraordinary views and fascinating archaeological remains. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is where Jewish rebels are believed to have made their final attempt to resist Roman invaders (c 74 CE).
- The Sea of Salt: Float into happiness at the Dead Sea.
- Hike in Nahal David, part of the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve.
- Return to Jerusalem and to the hotel.
- Enjoy a Bnai Mitzvah celebration at the Haas Promenade overlooking the Old City.
- ADULTS: Visit Yad Vashem, the national memorial to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, an essential emotional and educational experience. Your guided tour will include:
- The Avenue of the Righteous, where trees symbolic of the renewal of life have been planted along with plaques honoring brave non-Jews who saved Jews during the Shoah.
- The Historical Museum, a state-of-the-art interactive display reflecting decades of research and educational expertise. The story of the Holocaust, with an emphasis on individual victims, is told through survivor testimonies, original artifacts, and personal possessions saved from the ghettos and camps.
- The Children’s Memorial, commemorating the 1.5 million children lost during the Holocaust.
- KIDS: Visit Ein Yael, an interactive, living museum, located on a 2,000-year-old archaeological site.
- ALL: Experience the sights, smells, and tastes of Jerusalem while walking through the Mahane Yehuda open-air market.
- Check out of the hotel and drive to Tel Aviv.
- Modern Tel Aviv grew out of ancient Jaffa. Gaze out over the Mediterranean Sea; learn why Jaffa, mentioned in the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale, is so historically important; and see how its Old City reflects the present as well as the past.
- Eat, drink, and learn at Levinsky Market, where we’ll sample food, sweets, and spices from all over the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
- Stop at Hostages Square and learn about the struggle that took place to bring all hostages home.
- Experience the dynamism of Jewish life at the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, dedicated to telling their story and representing their diversity, highlighting the creative works and cultural riches of a variety of communities in different periods of history until the present day.
- Drive to the Upper Galilee and check into your hotel.
- Dinner at the hotel.
- Watch the panoramic views from Mt. Bental (overlooking the abandoned Syrian town of Kuneitra) and gain sharp insights into Israel’s security situation on the Golan Heights and the enormous challenges it is facing.
- OPTION 1: Enjoy a wine tasting at the boutique Odem Winery.
- OPTION 2: Jewish tradition calls on us to act ethically and sensitively to the animals who have been abused and to educate all of us about our treatment of our fellow creatures. Visit the Odem Freedom Farm, a rehabilitation center and educational project where rescued animals find refuge, and people seeking tranquility, healing, and compassion find solace. Here, animals and humans connect with nature and each other on a deep emotional level. Participate in a hands-on encounter with the animal residents of the farm including horses, pigs, birds, and even wolves.
- ALL: With the hot weather, it’s time to take to the water with rafting or kayaking down the Jordan River. This is the parched Middle East rather than the Rockies, so the current is mainly calm and suitable for ages five and up. Water shoes are recommended. Other activities include:
- After cooling down, get your adrenaline levels up at the adventure park. It includes a 40-foot high, all-levels climbing wall and 20 different rope bridges.
- You can also ride on a 300-foot zipline that will send you careening into the Jordan River.
- Dinner at the hotel.
- Check out of the hotel.
- Celebrate your Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the beauty, wilderness, and history of the Zippori National Park.
OR
Hike the peak of Mount Meron, the highest mountain in the Galilee, a beautiful nature reserve, and a sacred spot connected with the Jewish mystical tradition. - Drive along the coast and back in time to Caesarea, one of the Land of Israel's most important cities during the Roman Period. Explore life 2,000 years ago with its ancient theater, palace, and bathhouse. Stop at the Ancient Roman Aqueduct, located on the pristine beaches of Caesarea. With the ruins of a past empire to your backs, enjoy the power of the sand, sea and the rush of the water as you celebrate your journey throughout Israel.
- Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
- Transfer to Ben-Gurion International Airport.
- Arrive back in the US.
