DAY 1
ON OUR WAY

  • 7:40 p.m. Depart the US on recommended American Airlines direct flight AA94.

DAY 2
WELCOME TO MADRID
Fri. Feb 14, 2025
  • 8:45 a.m. Arrive at Madrid International Airport and transfer to the city center.
  • Start at Plaza de España, which features a monument to Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Orientation dialogue with your J² Expert Educator, including an overview of your journey.
  • Follow the footsteps of the Jewish community of Madrid, from the 9th-century old judería to the 14th-century new juderia. Along the way, we will also pass important monuments of Spanish history:
    • Stop at Plaza de Oriente, which used to be the Old Juderia cemetery.
    • Visit the Royal Palace.
    • Pass by the Teatro Real.
    • View of the Catedral de la Almudena.
  • Lunch at Solomon kosher grill restaurant.
  • Tour the Sephardic-Israeli Center, which aims to promote the legacy of Sephardic culture as a living and integral part of Spanish culture, fostering a greater understanding of the Jewish culture in the heart of Spanish society and driving the development of ties of friendship and cooperation between Spanish and Israeli society.
  • Visit the Beth Yaacov Synagogue and the Museum of the Jewish Community of Madrid. This was the first synagogue built in Madrid since the Spanish Inquisition. Take a journey through the contemporary history of the presence of Jewish life in Madrid, from its beginnings to the present day, through photographs, images and graphic elements, and ritual objects.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Shabbat service at the synagogue of the Comunidad Judia Reformista. After services we will join their communal Shabbat dinner and mingle with local youths.
  • Walk back to the hotel.

DAY 3
SHABBAT IN MADRID

  • Shabbat morning learning session.
  • Discover the beauty of Madrid with a panoramic walking tour of the city, including stops at:
    • Plaza Mayor, site of multiple "acts of faith"- the infamous "auto-da-fé" of the Spanish Inquisition.
    • The San Miguel Market, where we will sample some of its famous tapas dishes.
    • Puerta Del Sol, the center of the city.
    • The Puerta de Alcala (Alcala Gate), a monument located in the Plaza de la Independencia in Madrid. In 1823 the gate was damaged by shrapnel during the Spanish Civil War. The fragments can be seen on the gate to this day.
  • Late Shabbat lunch at a restaurant.
  • Guided tour of The Prado, one of the world's most-renowned art museums and the best collection of classical art in Madrid.
  • The Central Park of Madrid: In Retiro Park, we will stop at the Doctor Angel Pulido Fernandez monument and discuss his role in the Restoration, his campaign to rebuild ties with the descendants of the expelled Sephardic Jews, but also his controversial views on Ashkenazi Jews and on Islam.
  • Spain's Golden Age of Literature: Walking tour through Calle Huertas, Madrid's historic Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter). As you stroll down Huertas Street, you can read quotes by these Golden Age authors - Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Francisco de Quevedo - that are engraved into the stones of the street.
  • Walk back to the hotel.
  • Ben Kodesh Lechol: Havdalah.
  • Board games & pizza night with local Moishe House residents.

DAY 4
TOLEDO AND TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF CONQUEST AND CULTURE
Sun. Feb 16, 2025
  • Depart for Toledo, which remains much as it was in the 16th century, and begin with a panoramic tour of the city.
  • Tour through the Jewish Quarter, including the Samuel Halevi Abulafia Synagogue, which was turned into a church known as Nuestra Señora del Tránisito, the Sephardic Museum, and the Santa Maria La Blanca Church (formerly the Grand Synagogue).
  • Visit the Church of Santo Tomé which was constructed on the site of an 11th-century mosque.
  • Return to Madrid.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Attend a soccer game at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, home to the famous Real Madrid football team (pending game schedule).

DAY 5
CORDOBA: MY HEART IS IN THE EAST AND WE ARE HERE
Mon. Feb 17, 2025
  • Travel by AVE (high-speed) train for a day-trip to Cordoba, the capital of the Moorish Kingdom of al-Andalus.
  • Visit Cordoba’s famous Cathedral-Mosque with its 1,000 colored columns.
  • Continue to the Jewish Quarter, including Plaza Tiberias and the Yehuda Halevi Square. Proceed to the Statue of Maimonides and the Maimonides Synagogue.
  • Special program and ladino concert at Casa de Sefarad, dedicated to the history of the Sephardic Jews in Cordoba and Spain prior to the Inquisition and the expulsion of 1492.
  • Return to Madrid by AVE (high-speed) train.
  • Late arrival in Madrid.
  • Farewell dinner followed by a flamenco show.

DAY 6
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
Tue. Feb 18, 2025
  • 8:30 a.m. Check out of the hotel.
  • On our way to the airport, stop at the Garden of the Three Cultures, symbolizing the coexistence in Spain of the Hebrew, Christian, and Muslim civilizations. Close to the gardens is also the Monument to the Victims of the Holocaust. Share thoughts and feelings before returning home.
  • 12:25 p.m. Depart Madrid on recommended American Airlines direct flight AA8835.
  • 3:00 p.m. Land at JFK Airport.

  • Validity | All prices quoted are based on exchange rates as of the proposal date and are subject to change without notice. Rates are per person and are based on shared twin room occupancy.
  • How to Make a Reservation | The quickest way to make a reservation is to register online or contact us by email. We accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards. A non-refundable deposit of $1,000 is required in order to complete the registration process.
  • For any assistance with this registration process or other trip-related queries, please email Customer Care: customercare@j2adventures.com.
  • Payments | The balance of your payment is due 120 days before your trip begins, or as specified in your invoice. You will receive an email reminder 2 weeks before this date. Various payment options are available as follows:
    • Credit card | We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Please check with your credit card provider regarding international processing fees. We are unable to process payments of over $1,000 over the phone. Please submit payment online via a credit card or by wiring funds via your bank.
    • Domestic bank wire transfer | Payment should be wired in the same currency that is listed on your invoice. Please add the name of your group or invoice number as a reference and forward a copy of the transfer receipt by email. The bank transfer should clearly state the beneficiary’s name on the wire transfer.
  • J² Adventures reserves the right to automatically cancel your reservation on that date and it may be subject to reconfirmation should the final payment not be received.
  • Cancelation Policy | All cancelations need to be made in writing. The cancelation fee depends on the date when we receive written notification of your request to cancel your booking. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable.
  • Cancelation fees | Cancelations made 120 or more days prior to departure incur the loss of the deposit. Cancelations made 119 to 46 days prior to departure incur the loss of 50% of the full trip cost. Cancelations made 45 days or less prior to the departure incur the loss of 100% of the full trip cost.
  • Cancelation fees may also include: Hotel or supplier cancelation fees. J² Adventures reserves the right to adjust its terms of payment, including cancelation policies and initial deposits.
