Program Itinerary

DAY 1
ON THE ROAD TO FES
Tue. Oct 28, 2025
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Depart Marrakech on a direct train to Fes, once the capital of Morocco and the largest medieval city in the Arab world. Fes has been home to Jewish scholars and rabbis for centuries, making it a center of Jewish learning and culture.
  • Packaged lunch, en route.
  • Arrive in Fes and transfer to your Riad, a traditional Moroccan hotel.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant.
Overnight: Fes Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 2
THE MYSTERIES OF FES
Wed. Oct 29, 2025
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Fes and its historic Medina (Walled City) from the Borj Sud fortress, offering a panoramic perspective of this ancient city.
  • Travel through time as we explore:
    • The recently restored Ibn Danan Synagogue, one of the oldest and most important synagogues in North Africa.
    • The El Fassiyin Synagogue: This once-vital synagogue was used as a boxing ring and carpet factory until it was recently restored.
    • The Fes Jewish Cemetery, where we’ll hear stories of some of the city’s legendary rabbis who are buried here.
  • Fes’s Medina is a dense maze of alleyways and streets and the largest car-free pedestrian zone in the world. The visit includes:
    • A glimpse of local craftsmen at work in their shops.
    • A tour of the Madrasa Bou Inania, an ancient religious college and one of the few Islamic sites in Morocco that is accessible to non-Muslim visitors.
  • Lunch at a restaurant before continuing on our tour:
    • Stop at the University of Al-Karaouine, believed to be the oldest functioning university in the world. Non-Muslims can view it only from the outside.
    • Visit the Chouara Tannery.
  • Return to the hotel.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
Overnight: Fes Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 3
HIDDEN STORIES OF MOROCCO
Thu. Oct 30, 2025
  • Check out of the hotel and depart Fes.
  • Drive to Meknes, located on a fertile plain north of the Middle Atlas, and the former residence of the Sultan.
  • City of a Tyrant: We’ll examine the superb architecture of Meknes created during the long reign of Moulay Ismail, with its skillful blend of Islamic and European influences. But at his finely decorated mausoleum, we’ll also consider the less-attractive characteristics of “Moulay the Bloodthirsty,” who is said to have ordered the city walls to be decorated with the heads of 10,000 of his enemies.
  • Meet the caretaker of a now-empty synagogue and discuss the shifts in Jewish life in Morocco. The mass migration of the country’s Jews began after the establishment of the State of Israel and accelerated when Morocco gained independence in 1956 from its French rulers. Today, only a few thousand Jews remain. We’ll talk about Jewish life in Morocco in the past and present, and find out why people, often Jews but sometimes Muslims, are determined to maintain these once-crowded places of worship.
  • Visit to a Chateau winery in Morocco's beautiful countryside, followed by lunch and wine tasting.
  • Drive to Casablanca.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Farewell dinner at a restaurant.
Overnight: Casablanca Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 4
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
Fri. Oct 31, 2025
  • Check out of the hotel and transfer to Casablanca Airport for your flight back to the US.
Meals: Breakfast
