LISBON’S GEMS

  • Arrive at Lisbon International Airport.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Brief orientation with your tour educator who will accompany you on this journey.
  • Explore the Belem district of Lisbon, located on the River Tagus, from where many of the great Portuguese explorers embarked on their momentous voyages.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
  • Stop at the Monument to the Discoveries to pay tribute to the Portuguese Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries.
  • Pass by the impressive Jerónimos Monastery and learn about the story behind it impressive walls.
  • Return to the hotel with time to freshen up before dinner.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 3
EXPLORING LISBON
Fri. Oct 13, 2023
  • Experience Lisbon’s breathtaking scenery and beauty with a panoramic tour.
  • Take a tour with your tour educator in the Alfama Quarter, which still shows signs of the Moorish presence in the city. Explore the neighborhood's steep winding alleys, hidden landmark churches, and breathtaking views of the Tagus River.
  • Enjoy a tour of the center of Lisbon, including Rossio Square, Baixa (the downtown area), and Praça do Comércio, an impressive plaza facing the Tagus River.
  • Afternoon at leisure with time to prepare for Shabbat.
  • Shabbat Service at a local synagogue or at the hotel.
  • Shabbat dinner at a restaurant with local guests.

MAGICAL SINTRA

  • Excursion to the city of Sintra, the resort town of Portugal kings, perched high in the mountains. The town’s picturesque romantic monuments and mountainous vistas serve as the backdrop for unparalleled architectural and natural beauty.
  • Visit the Pena Palace and its surrounding Pena Park.
  • Depart Sintra and stop at Cabo da Roca. Overlooking the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean, stand at the western-most extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant.
  • Explore Cascais, originally a fishing village, and why it has become the place for investors.
  • Return to the hotel and free evening to explore Lisbon on own.

DAY 5
FROM LISBON TO PORTO
Sun. Oct 15, 2023
  • Check out of the hotel, depart Lisbon, and drive to Belmonte.
  • Lunch in Belmonte.
  • Meet with representatives from the Jewish community of Belmonte and hear testimonies about those who resisted expulsion.
  • Explore the Jewish Museum, which showcases the history of the Belmonte Jewish community since the Middle Ages.
  • Discover the synagogue in Belmonte and meet with a representative of the local Jewish community for a conversation on the Anussim of Portugal.
  • Depart to Porto.
  • Late check into the hotel.
  • Light dinner at the hotel.

DAY 6
PORTUGAL’S MEDIEVAL CAPITAL
Mon. Oct 16, 2023
  • Visit Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula. Walk through the synagogue’s museum to learn more about the Jewish community of Porto.
  • Spend time at the Crystal Palace Gardens for fantastic views overlooking the Douro River.
  • Lunch at the restaurant.
  • Take a walking tour of Porto’s old town. Along our tour we will see:
    • Se do Porto, one of the city's oldest monuments and one of the most important local Romanesque monuments.
    • Muralha Fernandina, which consists of a series of walls and towers that were built as early as 1336 during the reign of King D. Alfonso IV.
    • The Clérigos Tower, which is known as the symbol of the city, as well as the Old Jewish Quarter at Olival.
  • Explore Palacio da Bolsa, built in the 19th century by the city's Commercial Association.
  • Return to the hotel.
  • Visit the wine cellar at Taylor’s and enjoy port wine tasting and a festive dinner.

THE NEW CITY

  • Enjoy a special program at ANU The Museum of the Jewish People, which is dedicated to telling the ongoing story of the Jewish people.
  • Eat, drink, and learn at the Levinsky Market, where we’ll sample food and sweets from all over the Mediterranean and the Middle East. This multi-cultural tasting tour will double up as a delicious lunch.
  • Dialogue with journalist and author Matti Friedman, who spent years on the Israel beat for the New York Times and the foreign press.

DAY 9
THE CITY OF CREATIVITY
Thu. Oct 19, 2023
  • Explore the Old City of Jaffa, including the flea market – Shuk Hapishpishim.
  • Visit the Peres Peace Center, created by the late Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister and President of Israel.
  • Check out local murals and graffiti.
  • Walk down Bialik Street, home to many of Tel Aviv’s finest early artists and authors. Take a guided tour of Rubin House, the home and studio of the painter Reuven Rubin.

DAY 10
ON OUR WAY TO JERUSALEM

  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Take a Jeep ride in the Judean Hills.
  • Sample the best new local wines in the a Judean Hills winery.
  • Stop at the Haas Promenade for a traditional “shehechiyanu” blessing of thanksgiving.
  • Check into the hotel end have free time to prepare for Shabbat.
  • Shabbat services followed by home hospitality meal at Beit Hakerem with Rabbi Tamir Nir.

SHABBAT IN JERUSALEM

  • Explore the archaeological treasures and other highlights of the Jewish Quarter:
    • Tour the four Sephardi synagogues, which reflect the richness and diversity of Diaspora Jewish traditions.
    • Enter the Karaite Synagogue and meet with representatives of the community.
    • Meet with Rabbi Daniel Bouskila, director of the Sephardic Educational Center.
  • Experience the Mahane Yehuda open-air market.
  • Late check-out and farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Group transfer for your flight home.

What to expect

  • 10 nights' accommodations. Late check out on the day of departure is included.
  • 11 days of touring with a tour educator (guide), 10 days of touring in a luxury, air-conditioned bus.
  • Flight from Porto to Tel Aviv.
  • Daily breakfast, 5 lunches & 7 dinners.
  • Water on the bus.
  • Porterage at the hotels.
  • All site entrance fees & program fees as per your final program.

  • COVID related expenses, including tests.
  • Evening transportation when dinner is not included.

  • Validity | All prices quoted are based on exchange rates as of the proposal date and are subject to change without notice. Rates are per person and are based on shared twin room occupancy.
  • How to Make a Reservation | The quickest way to make a reservation is to register online or contact us by email. We accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards. A non-refundable deposit is required in order to complete the registration process.

  • Payments | The balance of your payment is due on April 1rst, 2023 or as specified on your invoice. You will receive an email reminder 2 weeks before this date. Various payment options are available as follows:
  • Credit card | We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Please check with your credit card provider regarding international processing fees. We are unable to process payments of over $1,000 over the phone. Please submit payment online via a credit card or by wiring funds via your bank.
  • Domestic bank wire transfer | Payment should be wired in the same currency that is listed on your invoice. Please add the name of your group or invoice number as a reference and forward a copy of the transfer receipt by email. The bank transfer should clearly state the beneficiary’s name on the wire transfer.

  • J² Adventures reserves the right to automatically cancel your reservation on that date and it may be subject to reconfirmation should the final payment not be received.
  • Cancelation Policy | All cancelations need to be made in writing. The cancelation fee depends on the date when we receive written notification of your request to cancel your booking. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable.
  • Cancelation fees | Cancelations made before April 1rst, 2023 incur the loss of the deposit. Cancelations between April 1rst, 2023 and 46 days prior to departure incur the loss of 50% of the full trip cost. Cancelations made 45 days or less prior to the departure incur the loss of 100% of the full trip cost.
  • Cancelation fees may also include: Hotel or supplier cancelation fees. J² Adventures reserves the right to adjust its terms of payment, including cancelation policies and initial deposits.
