DAY 4
LIFE IN A SHTETL AND ITS TRAGIC END
Wed. Mar 31, 2027
  • Depart the hotel and drive to Tykocin.
  • The town of Tykocin will provide us with insights into the Jewish world of the shtetl. We’ll walk its streets and visit its Baroque synagogue with historic wall paintings that were reconstructed in the 1970s. The former beit midrash (study hall) is the setting for a museum about the town and its Jewish past.
  • Just outside Tykocin, we’ll trace the footsteps of the town’s 2,000 Jews who in August 1941 were marched into the Lopuchowo Forest and executed. We’ll pay tribute to them and try to comprehend, in this quiet woodland with its mass graves and monuments, the last moments of Jewish community of Tykocin.
  • Travel to the Lopuchowo Forest, site of the 1941 massacre of Tykocin’s Jews. Reflect on this tragic chapter in a quiet woodland marked by mass graves and monuments.
  • Packed lunch en route.
  • For many years, the world knew little about Treblinka. This extermination camp was leveled completely by the Nazis and very few inmates survived to give witness. However, it is now understood that this was one of largest killing centers of the Holocaust. Our focus will be on Treblinka as a place of Jewish heroism and not just of death. The educator Janusz Korczak was killed here because he refused to abandon the children from the orphanage he ran. We will also recall the prisoner revolt and escape attempt of May 2, 1943.
  • Return to the hotel.
Overnight: Warsaw Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 5
JEWISH HERITAGE IN KRAKOW
Thu. Apr 1, 2027
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Depart Warsaw by train to Krakow, traveling through Poland’s scenic countryside.
  • Begin with an in-depth tour of Kazimierz, the historic Jewish Quarter. Once the center of Jewish life in Krakow for centuries, today it is a vibrant cultural and historical district. Our visit will include:
    • Altshul Synagogue – Dating back to the 15th century, this is the oldest standing synagogue in Poland.
    • Rema Synagogue and Cemetery – Named after Rabbi Moses Isserles (the “Rema”), this is one of the few active synagogues in Krakow. The adjacent cemetery is a resting place for many prominent Jewish scholars.
    • Enter the Tempel Synagogue, now a cultural venue at the heart of Jewish revival. No longer in regular use for prayer, this synagogue is now a key venue for concerts and cultural events, symbolizing the revival of Jewish culture in Krakow.
  • Meet with the Directors of the Jewish Culture Festival to learn about their vision, motivations, and how the Festival grew into one of Europe’s most significant cultural events.
  • Check into the hotel.
  • Evening at leisure to explore Krakow's rich culinary scene.
Overnight: Krakow Meals: Breakfast
DAY 6
AUSCHWITZ: THE FINAL WITNESS
Fri. Apr 2, 2027
  • Head to the Auschwitz–Birkenau complex, the largest of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Over 1.1 million people lost their lives in the Auschwitz camps. Our experience will include:
    • The first camp built at Auschwitz, a mass concentration camp. Here, we’ll visit the Auschwitz museum which contains powerful artifacts and haunting footage of the lives and deaths of prisoners.
    • We will then make the short drive to the Auschwitz II death camp, also known as Birkenau. Largely untouched since the war, it provides intimate insights into the tragedy of the Holocaust. We’ll reflect here on the personal stories of some of the Jews held and killed here and read accounts from survivors.
  • Group lunch, en route.
  • Visit the restored Oświęcim Synagogue, a powerful example of a Jewish community that once thrived just miles from Auschwitz.
  • Return to Krakow.
  • Come together for Shabbat dinner at the Krakow Jewish Community Center. We will hear from JCC Director Jonathan Ornstein and local community members who are dedicated to rebuilding Jewish life in Poland.
Overnight: Krakow Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 7
ECHOES OF HISTORY
Sat. Apr 3, 2027
  • Take a guided journey following the Jewish community on their descent from Kazimierz, crossing over the bridge into the Jewish Ghetto of Podgorze, where the stories of victims and survivors converge. Here, you'll also connect with the figure of Oscar Schindler, whose factory nearby became a beacon of hope, saving over a thousand Jews from the horrors of the camps.
  • Continue into Krakow’s historic Old Town, making your way to the Main Market Square, one of Europe’s most impressive medieval squares, where centuries‑old architecture and vibrant modern life come together in a lively public space.
  • Spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure, with free time to continue exploring the charming streets of the Old Town: whether browsing local shops, relaxing in a café on the square, or discovering one of the city’s many cultural treasures.
  • Mark the end of Shabbat with a communal havdalah ceremony.
  • Farewell dinner at Klezmer-Hois, an authentic Jewish-style restaurant in Kazimierz, where we will enjoy a meal accompanied by live Klezmer music.
Overnight: Krakow Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
