ARRIVAL: DISCOVERY & FIRST ENCOUNTERS

  • Arrive at Lisbon International Airport and meet your J² Expert Educator and local guide, who will accompany you throughout this journey of discovery.
  • Begin with an introduction to Portugal’s global story in the Belém district, set along the Tagus River - the launching point of the great voyages of exploration.
  • Explore the Monument to the Discoveries, reflecting on Portugal’s Age of Discovery and its global impact.
  • Pass by the Jerónimos Monastery, an architectural masterpiece whose history is intertwined with empire, faith, and power.
  • Enjoy time at leisure for lunch.
  • Indulge in a tasting of Lisbon’s most iconic pastry, pastéis de Belém, and uncover the story behind its closely guarded recipe.

DAY 3
LISBON: HIDDEN HISTORIES & LIVING COMMUNITY

  • Begin your day at Castelo de São Jorge, taking in sweeping panoramic views over Lisbon and grounding yourself in the city’s layered past.
  • Continue into the heart of Lisbon. Stop at Rossio Square, once home to the Inquisition tribunals, and the Baixa district and Praça do Comércio, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.
  • Immerse yourself in Lisbon’s vibrant culinary culture at the Time Out Market, with free time to explore and enjoy lunch.
  • In the afternoon, set out on a tuk-tuk exploration of Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. As you wind through its narrow alleys and hidden corners, engage in a guided “reading of the city” - learning to identify traces of Jewish and converso life embedded in the urban landscape.
  • Pause at the site of the Lisbon Massacre of 1506 for a guided moment of reflection on this devastating chapter in Jewish history, and consider its lasting implications.
  • Visit the Shaaré Tikva Synagogue, the first synagogue built in Portugal after centuries of prohibition. Meet with a member of Lisbon’s Jewish community for a candid conversation about Jewish life in Portugal today - its challenges, growth, and renewal.
  • Evening at leisure to explore Lisbon’s dynamic culinary scene.

SINTRA: ROYAL LANDSCAPES & CULTURAL TRADITIONS

  • Depart Lisbon for Sintra, a magical town of royal retreats, lush landscapes, and romantic architecture.
  • Visit the Pena Palace grounds and park, perched high above the hills, and explore its whimsical design and sweeping vistas.
  • Continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe—standing at the edge of the continent where land meets the vast Atlantic.
  • Enjoy free time for lunch in the charming seaside town of Cascais.
  • Return to Lisbon.
  • This afternoon, step into Portuguese culinary tradition with a hands-on baking workshop, learning to craft pastéis de nata from scratch. Through this experience, explore how food, memory, and identity are interwoven in Portuguese culture.

BELMONTE: SECRECY, SURVIVAL & RETURN
Thu. Mar 18, 2027
  • Check out and depart Lisbon for Belmonte, one of the most powerful centers of Jewish continuity in Portugal.
  • Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at a Jewish-owned establishment.
  • Walk through the historic Jewish Quarter, where generations of Jews lived as crypto-Jews (Anusim) - preserving traditions in secrecy for centuries.
  • Visit the Belmonte Jewish Museum, tracing the community’s history from medieval times through the Inquisition and into modern rediscovery.
  • Enter the Belmonte Synagogue, an active house of worship today.
  • Meet with members of the local Jewish community - descendants of the Anusim - for an intimate conversation. Through personal stories, explore themes of identity, memory, and the remarkable return to open Jewish life.
  • Continue to Porto and check into your hotel.
  • Dinner at leisure.

DAY 6
PORTO: RENEWAL & COMMUNITY
Fri. Mar 19, 2027
  • Begin at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, and learn about its role in the revival of Jewish life in 20th-century Portugal.
  • Continue your exploration of Porto with a scenic stroll along the riverbanks, beginning at the vibrant Cais da Ribeira for beautiful views of the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.
  • Free time for lunch at the Ribeira local market.
  • Romanesque to Romanticism: View the main sites of the city, including: Avenida dos Aliados, Clérigos Tower, which is known as the symbol of the city, São Bento railway station, decorated with 20,000 tiles depicting the history of Portugal, and the Ribeira neighborhood near the riverfront, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Participate in a ceramic tile workshop, learning traditional Portuguese techniques and creating your own piece inspired by local artistry.
  • Return to the hotel to prepare for Shabbat.
  • Join Porto’s HaMakom community for a deeply meaningful Kabbalat Shabbat and dinner, filled with music, connection, and shared reflection.

DOURO VALLEY: LANDSCAPE, LEGACY & REFLECTION

  • Board a private rabelo boat for a scenic cruise along the Douro River, surrounded by dramatic landscapes shaped by generations of human labor and craftsmanship.
  • Continue to a local vineyard for lunch and a tasting experience.
  • Explore the historical role of Jews in Iberian trade networks and consider how commerce, migration, and identity intersect across time.
  • Visit the town of Lamego before returning to Porto.
  • As Shabbat concludes, gather for a group havdalah ceremony, marking the transition from sacred time back into the everyday.
  • In the evening, experience an intimate Fado performance, Portugal’s soulful musical tradition, often associated with longing and memory.
  • Conclude the journey with a farewell dinner.

    • Validity | All prices quoted are based on exchange rates as of the proposal date and are subject to change without notice. Rates are per person and are based on shared twin room occupancy.
    • How to Make a Reservation | The quickest way to make a reservation is to register online or contact us by email. We accept VISA, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards. A non-refundable deposit of $675 is required in order to complete the registration process.

  • Payments | The balance of your payment is due 120 days before your trip begins, or as specified in your invoice. You will receive an email reminder 2 weeks before this date. Various payment options are available as follows:
    • Credit card | We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Please check with your credit card provider regarding international processing fees. We are unable to process payments of over $1,000 over the phone. Please submit payment online via a credit card or by wiring funds via your bank.
    • Domestic bank wire transfer | Payment should be wired in the same currency that is listed on your invoice. Please add the name of your group or invoice number as a reference and forward a copy of the transfer receipt by email. The bank transfer should clearly state the beneficiary’s name on the wire transfer.
  • J² Adventures reserves the right to automatically cancel your reservation on that date and it may be subject to reconfirmation should the final payment not be received.
  • Cancelation Policy | All cancelations need to be made in writing. The cancelation fee depends on the date when we receive written notification of your request to cancel your booking. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable.
    • Cancelation fees | Cancelations made 120 or more days prior to departure incur the loss of the deposit. Cancelations made 119 to 46 days prior to departure incur the loss of 50% of the full trip cost. Cancelations made 45 days or less prior to the departure incur the loss of 100% of the full trip cost.
    • Cancelation fees may also include: Hotel or supplier cancelation fees. J² Adventures reserves the right to adjust its terms of payment, including cancelation policies and initial deposits.
