Jewish history here dates back to the 1500s when Conversos—Jews forced to convert to Catholicism—arrived during the colonial era, often practicing their faith in secret during the Inquisition. During the 19th century, after Mexico’s independence, waves of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews immigrated from Europe and the Ottoman Empire, establishing vibrant communities. Today, Mexico’s Jewish population—mostly centered in Mexico City—is diverse and culturally rich, with deep roots shaped by resilience, tradition, and ongoing efforts to preserve their unique heritage.
