INSIDE OUT. JEWISH LATVIA.
While there were more than 200 synagogues in Latvia before World War II, today only one synagogue is operational in Riga, Latvia’s capital. That being said, Latvia is the largest Jewish community in the Baltic region, home to between 5,000 and 12,000 Jews. Today’s Jewish community is made up of Holocaust survivors, who had escaped to Russia after the Nazi invasion, as well as Jews who immigrated to Latvia more recently from the former Soviet Union.
