The Greek contribution to western civilization is tremendous. After all, it’s thanks to the Greeks that we have democracy. Not to mention contributions to astrology, mathematics, and philosophy. As for the people, Greeks are warm and hospitable as well as sunny and passionate. And then there’s the food: some of the most delicious bites in the world come from Greece – souvlaki, baklava, feta cheese, moussaka. You won’t be able to resist.
Inside out. Jewish Greece.
Jews played a vital role in Greek history – from the Hellenistic period and early history of Christianity, through the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Greece, until the near-destruction of the Jewish community during Nazi occupation. Today, approximately 5,000 Jews live in Greece. Its current Jewish centers of Greek Jewry are Athens and Thessalonica and a handful of smaller towns, amongst them Ionanina. We are going to explore them all.
